The Standing Committee on Industry, Natural Resources, Science and Technology met at 9:04 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Brent St. Denis, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Michael Chong, Hon. Marlene Jennings, Brian Masse, Lynn Myers, Hon. Jerry Pickard, Werner Schmidt, Brent St. Denis and Bradley R. Trost.

 

Acting Members present: Brian Jean for John Duncan, Carole Lavallée for Paul Crête, Hon. Judi Longfield for Hon. Denis Coderre and Robert Vincent for Marc Boulianne.

 

Other Members present: Pat Martin.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Andrew Kitching, Analyst; Dan Shaw, Analyst. House of Commons: Jean-Francois Lafleur, Legislative Clerk.

 

Appearing: Hon. Joe Fontana, Minister of Labour and Housing; Hon. Jerry Pickard, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

On motion of Werner Schmidt, it was agreed, — That the Eighth Report of the Standing Committee on Industry, Natural Resources, Science and Technology requesting an extension of thirty sitting days to consider Bill C-281, An Act to amend the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, the Canada Business Corporations Act, the Employment Insurance Act and the Employment Insurance Regulation, be adopted and presented to the House.

 

On motion of Bradley R. Trost, it was agreed, — That the proposed budget for the study of Bill C-281, An Act to amend the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, the Canada Business Corporations Act, the Employment Insurance Act and the Employment Insurance Regulations, in the amount of $ 16, 250 for the period of November 1, 2005, to February 17, 2006, be adopted.

 

On motion of Michael Chong, it was agreed, — That the proposed budget for the study of Bill C-55, An Act to establish the Wage Earner Protection Program Act, to amend the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act and the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts, in the amount of $ 38, 700 for the period of November 1, 2005, to March 31, 2006, be adopted.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Thursday, May 5, 2005, the Committee commenced consideration of Bill C-281, An Act to amend the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, the Canada Business Corporations Act, the Employment Insurance Act and the Employment Insurance Regulations.
 

The Chair called Clause 1.

 

Pat Martin made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 9:39 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:41 a.m., the sitting resumed in a televised session.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, October 5, 2005, the Committee commenced consideration of Bill C-55, An Act to establish the Wage Earner Protection Program Act, to amend the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act and the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts.
 

The Chair called Clause 1.

 

The Minister and the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry made statements and answered questions.

 

At 10:59 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
