Meeting No. 17

Monday, February 7, 2005

The Standing Committee on Industry, Natural Resources, Science and Technology met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 371 West Block, the Vice-Chair, Werner Schmidt, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Serge Cardin, Michael Chong, Paul Crête, John Duncan, Brian Masse, Lynn Myers, Hon. Jerry Pickard, Andy Savoy, Werner Schmidt and Bradley R. Trost.

Acting Members present: Hon. Don Boudria for Brent St. Denis.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lalita Acharya, Analyst ; Jean-Luc Bourdages, Analyst ; Dan Shaw, Analyst.

Witnesses: As an Individual: Pierre Coulombe.

Pursuant to Standing Orders 110 and 111, the Committee commenced consideration of the Certificate of nomination of Pierre Coulombe to the position of President, National Research Council Canada, which was referred to the Committee on Friday, December 10, 2004.

The witness made a statement and answered questions.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

On motion of Lynn Myers, it was agreed, — That the proposed budget for the study of Bill C-9, An Act to establish the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, in the amount of $13,850 for the period of February 9, 2005, to March 31, 2005, be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Budget Subcommittee of the Liaison Committee.

The Committee resumed consideration of the Certificate of nomination of Pierre Coulombe to the position of President, National Research Council Canada.

Questioning of the witness resumed.

It was agreed, — That the Chair report to the House that this Committee has examined the qualifications and competence of Pierre Coulombe as President of National Research Council Canada and finds him competent to perform the duties of the position to which he has been nominated.

At 4:51 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
