Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the committee on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, the committee resumed its study of science at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

The committee resumed consideration of a draft report.

The committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to committee business.

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the committee undertake a study regarding American commercial fisheries’ interception of wild salmon and steelhead originating in Canadian rivers, as well as the impact of this interception on the conservation and rebuilding of British Columbia’s wild salmon populations; that a minimum of four meetings be dedicated to hearing from witnesses; and that one meeting be dedicated to hearing from the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard and department officials.

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the committee undertake a study regarding plastic pollution in Canadian oceans and the impacts of such pollution on surrounding marine ecosystems and coastal communities; that a minimum of four meetings be dedicated to hearing from witnesses; and that one meeting be dedicated to hearing from the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard and department officials.

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the committee invite officials from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) for quarterly briefings on actions taken in relation to recommendations in past reports adopted by the committee; and that the committee allocate the first such meeting for a briefing on measures taken by DFO in response to recommendations tabled in the committee report entitled “West Coast Fisheries: Sharing Risks and Benefits” (42nd Parliament – Report 21).

At 2:24 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
