The Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met in camera at 11:14 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, Josée Beaudin, Dona Cadman, Ron Cannan, Ed Komarnicki, Yves Lessard, Ben Lobb, Tony Martin, Hon. Maria Minna and Michael John Savage.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Gurbax S. Malhi for Raymonde Folco and Bradley R. Trost for Maurice Vellacott.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Chantal Collin, Analyst; Kevin Kerr, Analyst.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, February 10, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of the federal contribution to reducing poverty in Canada.
 

It was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $20,100 for the study of the Federal Contribution to Reducing Poverty in Canada, be adpoted.

 

At 12:19 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:20 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), 2009, the Committee commenced its study of Amendments to the 2009 National Budget for the Canada Summer Jobs.
 

Yves Lessard moved, — That the following be reported to the House, at the earliest opportunity:

“Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills Development, Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities recommends that the Government amend the 2009 national budget for the Canada Summer Jobs initiative, given the increase in the minimum wage since 2006, as the Committee recommended during the First Session of the 38th Parliament in its report entitled “Summer Career Placement Program,” adopted on November 22, 2005”.

Debate arose thereon.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to on the following recorded division: YEAS: Josée Beaudin, Yves Lessard, Gurbax S. Malhi, Tony Martin, Maria Minna, Michael John Savage — 6; NAYS: Dona Cadman, Ron Cannan, Ed Komarnicki, Ben Lobb, Bradley R. Trost — 5.

 

At 12:55 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
