The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met in a televised session at 9:01 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Bruce Stanton, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Harold Albrecht, Hon. Larry Bagnell, Hon. Mauril Bélanger, Rob Clarke, Jean Crowder, John Duncan, Marc Lemay, Yvon Lévesque, LaVar Payne, Greg Rickford, Todd Norman Russell and Bruce Stanton.

 

Acting Members present: Luc Malo for Yvon Lévesque.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development.

 

Witnesses: Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development: Jim Quinn, Chief Financial Officer; Michael Wernick, Deputy Minister; Neil Yeates, Associate Deputy Minister; Patrick Borbey, Assistant Deputy Minister, Northern Affairs; Christine Cram, Assistant Deputy Minister, Education and Social Development Programs and Partnerships Sector.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 81(4), the Committee commenced consideration of the Main Estimates 2009-2010: Votes 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, L30, L35, 40, 45, 50 and 55 under INDIAN AFFAIRS AND NORTHERN DEVELOPMENT referred to the Committee on Thursday, February 26, 2009.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 10:05 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:10 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

At 10:51 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

 

At 10:53 a.m., the Committee resumed sitting in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee meet with the First Nations Finance Authority regarding Northern economic development for the second hour of the meeting on May 28, 2009.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee meet with the First Nations Education Council on June 2, 2009, and with the Department on June 4, 2009, on the subject of education.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee not meet on June 11, 2009, in order to allow Members of the Committee to attend the National Day of Reconciliation marking the first anniversary of Canada’s apology for its treatment of children, parents, and families as a result of the Indian Residential School system.

 

At 11:01 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
