The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met by videoconference at 9:01 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Yasmin Ratansi, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sylvie Boucher, Patricia Davidson, Nicole Demers, Johanne Deschamps, Irene Mathyssen, Hon. Maria Minna, Hon. Anita Neville, Glen Douglas Pearson, Yasmin Ratansi and Bruce Stanton.

 

Acting Members present: Mike Wallace for Nina Grewal.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Shahrzad Mobasher Fard, Analyst; Clara Morgan, Analyst; Karine Richer, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Glasgow Caledonian University: Ailsa McKay, Professor of Economics. Scottish Women's Budget Group: Angela O'Hagan, Convenor. City University of New York: Marilyn Rubin, Professor of Public Administration and Economics, John Jay College of Criminal Justice. UK Women's Budget Group: Janet Veitch, Co-Chair.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on November 21, 2007, the Committee resumed its study on Gender Budgets.
 

Ailsa McKay and Angela O'Hagan made statements and answered questions.

 

Marilyn Rubin and Janet Veitch made statements and answered questions.

 

At 10:24 a.m., the Vice-Chair, Irene Mathyssen took the Chair.

 

At 10:26 a.m., the Chair, Yasmin Ratansi, took the Chair.

 

At 10:58 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:58 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Nicole Demers moved, — That the Standing Committee on the Status of Women inform the Standing Committee on Justice of its formal opposition towards Bill C-484, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (injuring or causing the death of an unborn child while committing an offence), which questions the rights of women to abortion.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Mike Wallace moved, — That the motion be amended by replacing the words “formal opposition towards” with the words “major concerns with”.

Debate arose thereon.

 

The question was put on the amendment of Mike Wallace and it was negatived.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to on the following recorded division: YEAS: Nicole Demers, Johanne Deschamps, Irene Mathyssen, Maria Minna, Anita Neville, Glen Douglas Pearson — 6; NAYS: Sylvie Boucher, Patricia Davidson, Mike Wallace — 3.

 

At 11:09 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
