The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 9:01 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Yasmin Ratansi, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sylvie Boucher, Patricia Davidson, Nicole Demers, Johanne Deschamps, Nina Grewal, Irene Mathyssen, Hon. Maria Minna, Hon. Anita Neville, Glen Douglas Pearson, Yasmin Ratansi and Bruce Stanton.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Shahrzad Mobasher Fard, Analyst; Clara Morgan, Analyst; Karine Richer, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Queen's University: Kathleen Lahey, Professor, Institute of Women's Studies. Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives: Armine Yalnizyan, Senior Economist. Canadian Feminist Alliance for International Action: Nancy Peckford, Director of Programmes.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Committee resumed consideration of the motion of Nicole Demers, — That all the women of the Standing Committee on the Status of Women request the support of the women of their respective Caucus, to denounce Bill C-484, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (injuring or causing the death of an unborn child while committing an offence), and the dramatic consequences which it could have on the women of Quebec and Canada.

The debate continued.

 

On motion of Bruce Stanton, it was agreed, — That the motion be amended by replacing the words “the women” with the word “members”, by deleting the words “of the women”, and by replacing the word “denounce” with the word “reconsider”.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to on the following recorded division: YEAS: Sylvie Boucher, Patricia Davidson, Nicole Demers, Johanne Deschamps, Nina Grewal, Irene Mathyssen, Maria Minna, Anita Neville, Glen Douglas Pearson, Bruce Stanton — 10; NAYS: — 0.

 

The motion, as amended, read as follows:

That all members of the Standing Committee on the Status of Women request the support of their respective Caucus, to reconsider Bill C-484, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (injuring or causing the death of an unborn child while committing an offence), and the dramatic consequences which it could have on the women of Quebec and Canada.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on November 21, 2007, the Committee resumed its study on Gender Budgets.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 11:00 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
