The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met in camera at 9:05 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Yasmin Ratansi, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sylvie Boucher, Nicole Demers, Johanne Deschamps, Nina Grewal, Irene Mathyssen, Hon. Maria Minna, Hon. Anita Neville, Glen Douglas Pearson, Yasmin Ratansi and Bruce Stanton.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Sue Barnes for Glen Douglas Pearson and Rick Norlock for Patricia Davidson.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier, Analyst; Clara Morgan, Analyst; Karine Richer, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages.

 

Witnesses: Status of Women Canada: Clare Beckton, Coordinator, Office of the Coordinator.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on November 26, 2007, the Committee resumed its study of Women and the Court Challenges Program.
 

The Committee resumed consideration of a draft report.

 

It was agreed, — That the final report (as amended) on “Women and the Court Challenges Program” be adopted as the Second Report of the Standing Committee on the Status of Women.

 

It was agreed, — That the Clerk be authorized to make such grammatical and typographical changes as necessary without changing the substance of the Report.

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair be authorised to table the Report in the House.

 

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108 (1) (a), the Committee authorizes the printing of dissenting opinion of the government as an appendix to this report immediately after the signature of the Chair; that the dissenting opinion be limited to not more than 2 pages; (font = 12; line spacing = 1.5) and that the dissenting opinion be delivered in electronic format in both official languages to the Clerk of the Committee not later than 5:00 p.m., on Thursday, February 7th 2008.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, February 5, 2008, the Committee commenced its study of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
 

It was agreed, — That the government endorse the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 13 September 2007 and that Parliament and Government of Canada fully implement the standards contained therein, and that the decision of this Committee be reported to the House.

 

At 9:40 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

 

At 10:04 a.m., the Committee resumed sitting in public and televised.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced its study of matters relating to the mandate, management and operation of the department and its study of the Government Response to the 18th report (39th Parliament, 1st Session) entitled: The Impacts of Funding and Program Changes at Status of Women Canada.
 

The Minister made a statement and, with the other witness, answered questions.

 

At 11:07 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
