The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met in a televised session at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C Centre Block, the Chair, Hon. Charles L.Caccia, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Bernard Bigras, Charles L. Caccia, Joe Comartin, Rick Laliberte, Bob Mills, Julian Reed, Paul Szabo and Alan Tonks.

 

Acting Members present: Massimo Pacetti for Hélène Scherrer.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Tim Williams, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. David Collenette, Minister of Transport.

 

Witnesses: Department of Transport: Ronald Sully, Assistant Deputy Minister, Programs and Divestiture Group; Catherine Higgens, Director, Environmental Initiatives Division.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to its study on the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol.
 

The Minister made an opening statement and, with the other witness, answered questions.

 

Joe Comartin moved, — That the Committee call upon the federal government to seek a permanent reference to the International Joint Commission to coordinate and harmonize binational efforts for action to counter the threat of aquatic invasive species in the Great Lakes basin and any other basins within their jurisdiction..

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

 

Bob Mills moved, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee undertake a study on the state of renewable energy technologies and their current and potential uses in Canada..

 

After debate, by unanimous consent, the motion was allowed to stand.

 

At 5:45 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
