MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 3

Wednesday, February 20, 2002

The Sub-Committee on the Study of Sport in Canada of the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met in a televised session at 5:50 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Dennis Mills, presiding.

Members of the Sub-Committee present: Rodger Cuzner, Robert Lanctôt, Serge Marcil, Dennis Mills, Hélène Scherrer.

Acting Member present: Peter MacKay for Loyola Hearn.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Antony Jackson, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Commonwealth Games Association of Canada: Joan Duncan, President, CGC, Canadian Representative, CHOGM Sub-Committee on Cooperation through Sport; Bruce Kidd, Chair, Canadian Sport Leadership Corps Committee; Dean, Faculty of Physical Education & Health, University of Toronto; Alex Gardiner, Chair, Commonwealth Sport Development Program Management Committee: Head Coach & Chief Technical Officer, Athletics Canada; Diane Huffman, Director, International Sport Development.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study of the role of Canadian sport in humanitarianism.

Joan Duncan made a statement.

Bruce Kidd made a presentation.

The witnesses answered questions.

It was agreed, - That the Chair be authorized to write to the Prime Minister on behalf of the Sub-Committee to request that the Prime Minister announce Canada’s commitment to the continuation of the Commonwealth Games Association of Canada’s International Sport Development Program at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in March, 2002.

At 7:11 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
