Tuesday, March 21, 2000

The Standing Committee on Industry met at 9:02 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Pierre Brien, John Cannis, Marlene Jennings, Walt Lastewka, Werner Schmidt and Susan Whelan.

Acting Members present: Gilles Bernier for Jim Jones and Pat Martin for Nelson Riis.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Gérald Lafrenière, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the House of Commons: Karen Redman, M.P. for Kitchener Centre. From the Department of Industry: Nicole Ladouceur, Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Competition, Fair Business Practices, Competition Bureau; Brendan Ross, Commerce Officer, Fair Business Practices Branch, Competition Bureau.

The Committee commenced consideration of the subject-matter of Bill C-229, An Act to amend the Canada Post Corporation Act (letter that cannot be transmitted by post).

Karen Redmand and Nicole Ladouceur made statements and answered questions.

At 10:10 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
