Meeting No. 67

Thursday, September 17, 1998

The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met in televised session at 1:38 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Charles Caccia, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Charles Caccia, Aileen Carroll, Rick Casson, Yvon Charbonneau, Bill Gilmour, John Herron, Joe Jordan, Gar Knutson, Karen Kraft Sloan, Rick Laliberté and David Pratt.

Acting Members present: Paddy Torsney for Sarkis Assadourian; Jocelyne Girard-Bujold for Bernard Bigras.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Monique Hébert and Christine Labelle, Researchers.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment: Dr. Peter D. Carter, Secretary. From the Canadian Institute of Child Health: Dr. Graham W. Chance, Chair; Sandra Schwartz, Director, Environmental Programs. From the Canadian Public Health Association: Fred Ruf, Member-at-Large, Human and Ecosystem Health. From the Canadian Health Coalition: Kathleen Connors, Chair; Michael McBean, National Coordinator. From the Learning Disabilities Association of Canada: Barbara McElgunn, Health Liaison Officer.

The Chair called Clause 1.

The Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-32, An Act respecting pollution prevention and the protection of the environment and human health in order to contribute to sustainable development. (See Minutes of Proceedings, dated Wednesday, May 14, 1998, Meeting No. 53)

Dr. Peter D. Carter, Dr. Graham W. Chance, Fred Ruf, Kathleen Connors, Michael McBean, Barbara McElgunn made opening statements and, with Sandra Schwartz, answered questions.

At 3:02 p.m., the Vice-chair, Bill Gilmour, did take the Chair

At 3:33 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
