Meeting No. 65

Wednesday, September 16, 1998

The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met in televised session at 1:43 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Vice-Chair, Gar Knutson, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Aileen Carroll, Rick Casson, Yvon Charbonneau, Bill Gilmour, Gar Knutson, Karen Kraft Sloan, Rick Laliberté and David Pratt.

Acting Members present: Jocelyne Girard-Bujold for Bernard Bigras; Paddy Torsney for Joe Jordan.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Monique Hébert and Christine Labelle, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the World Wildlife Fund: Julia Langer, Director, Wildlife Toxicology Program; Craig Boljkovac, Project Officer. From the Canadian Environmental Defence Fund: Burkhard Mausberg, Executive Director. From the Canadian Institute for Business and the Environment: Gary Gallon, President. From St. Lawrence, Great Lakes United: Stéphane Gingras, Regional Field Coordinator. From the Reach for Unbleached Foundation: Dolores Broten, Executive Director.


The Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-32, An Act respecting pollution prevention and the protection of the environment and human health in order to contribute to sustainable development. (See Minutes of Proceedings dated Wednesday, May 14, 1998, Meeting No. 53)

The Chair called Clause 1.

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 2:46 o'clock p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 2:54 o'clock p.m., the sitting resumed.

At 4:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
