Meeting No. 54

Tuesday, November 24, 1998

The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 11:05 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Clifford Lincoln, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Mauril Bélanger, Paul Bonwick, Sarmite Bulte, John Godfrey, Wendy Lill, Clifford Lincoln, Inky Mark, Ted McWhinney, Dennis Mills, Mark Muise and Suzanne Tremblay.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Mollie Dunsmuir and Gaston Blais, Researchers.

Witnesses: From the Association of Canadian Advertisers: Ronald S. Lund, President & CEO. From the Canadian Media Directors Council: Janet Callaghan, Past President and Representative of the Board of Directors. From the Institute of Canadian Advertising: David Harrison, President & CEO. From Lang Michener, Barristers & Solicitors: Clifford Sosnow and Ken Purchase, Counsels.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference of the House dated Tuesday, November 3, 1998, a study of Bill C-55, An Act respecting advertising services supplied by foreign periodical publishers.

The Chair called Clause 1

On Clause 1

Ron Lund, Janet Callaghan and David Harrison made opening statements and with Clifford Sosnow, Ken Purchase and Jacques Larose, answered questions.

At 12:55 p.m., the Committee proceeded to consider its future business.

It was agreed,--That Departmental officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade be invited to appear before the Committee fifteen minutes after the start of the November 25, 1998 meeting scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

On motion of Mauril Bélanger, it was agreed,--That amendments on Bill C-55 be submitted by noon on November 30, 1998.

At 1:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
