Meeting No. 52

Wednesday, November 18, 1998

The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Clifford Lincoln, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Paul Bonwick, Sarmite Bulte, Clifford Lincoln, Inky Mark, Ted McWhinney, Dennis Mills and Mark Muise.

Acting Members present: Pierre de Savoye for Suzanne Tremblay and Charlie Penson for Inky Mark.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Gaston Blais and Grant Purves, Researchers.

Witnesses: From the Time Canada Ltd.: Donald F. Brown, President; Ron Atkey, Counsel, Osler, Hoskin & Hancourt, Barristers & Solicitors; George Russell, Editor. From the Reader's Digest Magazines (Canada) Ltd: Barbara Robins, Vice-President and Senior Legal Counsel; C.J. Michael Flavell, Lawyer, Flavell Kubrick & Lalonde, Barristers & Solicitors and Paul M. Pursuant to the Order of Reference of the House dated Tuesday, November 3, 1998, the Committee proceeded to the study of Bill C-55, Foreign Publishers Advertising Services Act.

George Russell made an opening statement and, with the other witnesses answered questions.

Barbara Robins, Paul Lalonde and Michael Flavell made opening statements and answered questions.

At 5:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
