MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

(Meeting No. 16)

 

(TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1998)

 

The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 11:19 o’clock a.m., this day, in room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Clifford Lincoln, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Clifford Lincoln, Mauril Bélanger, Paul Bonwick, John Godfrey, Pat O'Brien, Jacques Saada, Jim Abbott, Deepak Obhrai, Caroline St-Hilaire, Suzanne Tremblay and Mark Muise.

 

Acting Members present: Gurbax Malhi for Sarmite Bulte and Louise Hardy for Wendy Lill.

 

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: René Lemieux and Susan Alter, Research Officers.

 

Witnesses: From Carleton University: Michèle Martin, Professor, School of Journalism and Communications. As individual: Terry Cheney, Consultant.

 

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its consideration of the Envolving Role of the Federal Government in support of Culture in Canada.

 

Michèle Martin and Terry Cheney made opening statements and answered questions.

 

By unanimous consent,--The Committee proceeded to consider its future business.

 

It was agreed,--That the CRTC be invited to appear before the Committee in relation to its (CRTC) mandate.

 

It was agreed,--That the Clerk prepare a work plan and budget for the committees to hold cross Canada hearings.

 

At 12:55 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
