MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 18

Wednesday, April 9, 2014

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met in camera at 3:39 p.m. this day, in Room 268, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Rodney Weston, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Robert Chisholm, Ryan Cleary, Patricia Davidson, Randy Kamp, François Lapointe, Ryan Leef, Hon. Lawrence MacAulay, Robert Sopuck, John Weston and Rodney Weston.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Thai Nguyen, Analyst.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

It was agreed, — That the Committee immediately undertake a study on the changing ocean conditions or other factors off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador that have led to stock fluctuations in northern shrimp and other species; and that the study include a review of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans` science related to the shrimp fishery and conservation management measures; and that the study consist of no more than four meetings and include the following witnesses:

• DFO scientists/officials

• Dr. George Rose, Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland

• Jay Luger, Fisheries Outreach Manager, Marine Stewardship Council

• Patrick McGuinness, Fisheries Council of Canada

• Bruce Chapman, President of Canadian Association of Prawn Producers

• Martin Sullivan, Oceans Choice International

• Derek Butler, Seafood Producers

• Torngat Joint Fisheries Board – representatives

• Others as determined by the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure.

At 4:33 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
