The Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 1:05 p.m. this day, in Room 306, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Scott Reid, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Hon. Irwin Cotler, Nina Grewal, Wayne Marston, Scott Reid and David Sweet.

 

Acting Members present: Wladyslaw Lizon for Gary Ralph Schellenberger and Christine Moore for Pierre Jacob.

 

Other Members present: Hon. Judy Sgro and John Weston.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Erin Shaw, Analyst; Brian Hermon, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: As an individual: Payam Akhavan, Professor, Faculty of Law, McGill University. Bahá'í Community of Canada: Susanne Tamás, Director, Government Relations, Office of External Affairs.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee hear testimony from Justus Weiner, a Jerusalem-based international human rights law expert, on the impact of the Arab Spring on Christians in the region of the Middle East; and

That this witness, Justus Weiner, appear before the Subcommittee on June 4, 2013.

 

By unanimous consent, on motion of David Sweet, it was agreed, — That the Subcommittee hear additional testimony regarding the allegations raised by previous witnesses regarding the mining industry in Honduras;

That the Subcommittee invite a representative of GoldCorp Inc. to appear before the Subcommittee;

That the Subcommittee invite a representative from the government of Honduras to speak on the subject of corporate social responsibility; and

That the above mentioned witnesses comprise the final two meetings to be allocated to the study of Honduras.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Subcommittee on Tuesday, November 29, 2011, the Subcommittee resumed its study of the Human Rights Situation in Iran.
 

Susanne Tamás, by videoconference from Montreal, Quebec, and Payam Akhavan, by teleconference from Florence, Italy, each made a statement and answered questions.

 

It was agreed, — That a proposed budget in the amount of $6,070, for the study of the Human Rights Situation in Iran, be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development.

 

At 2:08 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
