The Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met in camera at 1:05 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Scott Reid, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Harold Albrecht, Nina Grewal, Pierre Jacob, Wayne Marston, Scott Reid and David Sweet.

 

Acting Members present: Ted Hsu for Hon. Irwin Cotler.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Erin Shaw, Analyst; Charlotte Landry, Research Assistant.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

It was agreed, — Whereas the Government of the People's Republic of China continues to enforce policies that infringe on fundamental freedoms of Tibetans, including but not limited to, restrictions on freedom to practice religion;

Whereas, in light of the upcoming 2013 Universal Periodic Review of the People’s Republic of China’s human rights record, and in order to assist the Government of Canada in its assessment of said record;

That the Subcommittee initiate a study of the human rights situation in the so-called Autonomous Region of Tibet within the People’s Republic of China.

 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee invite Ms. Walaa Salah, from the Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA Network), to appear.

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair send a letter to the Minister of Foreign Affairs recommending that the Government of Canada express condolences to the family of Oswaldo Paya Sardinas.

 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee invite Mario Silva, Chair of the Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research, to appear.

 

At 1:45 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
