The Standing Committee on Official Languages met in a televised session at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room C-110, 1 Wellington Street, the Chair, the Hon. Michael D. Chong, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Joyce Bateman, Tyrone Benskin, Corneliu Chisu, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Hon. Stéphane Dion, Royal Galipeau, Yvon Godin, Erin O'Toole and Bernard Trottier.

 

Acting Members present: Stella Ambler for Jacques Gourde, François Lapointe for Pierre Dionne Labelle and Mathieu Ravignat for Élaine Michaud.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lucie Lecomte, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages: Graham Fraser, Commissioner of Official Languages.

 
Pursuant to Standing Orders 110 and 111, the Committee commenced consideration of the certificate of nomination of Graham Fraser to the position of Commissioner of Official Languages which was referred to the Committee on Wednesday, March 6, 2013.
 

Graham Fraser made a statement and answered questions.

 

Yvon Godin gave notice of the following motion:

That the Committee invite the CEO of the Translation Bureau of Public Works and Government Services Canada, Ms. Donna Achimov, for a two-hour public and televised meeting about official languages in the federal public service between now and June 14, 2013.

 

François Lapointe gave notice of the following motion:

That the Committee invite the Minister of Industry to appear regarding Industry Canada’s report of March 8, 2013, entitled Language of Work in Federally Regulated Private Businesses in Quebec not subject to the Official Languages Act, for a two-hour public and televised meeting between now and June 14, 2013.

 

Yvon Godin moved, — That the nomination of Graham Fraser to the position of Commissioner of Official Languages be concurred in, and that the Chair report it to the House.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 11; NAYS: 0.

 

At 5:15 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
