The Standing Committee on Official Languages met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, the Hon. Michael D. Chong, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Tyrone Benskin, Corneliu Chisu, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Hon. Stéphane Dion, Royal Galipeau, Yvon Godin, Jacques Gourde, Élaine Michaud, Erin O'Toole and Bernard Trottier.

 

Acting Members present: Paul Calandra for Joyce Bateman and Isabelle Morin for Pierre Dionne Labelle.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lucie Lecomte, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Jacques Gourde moved, — That the Committee proceed to sit in camera.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 6; NAYS: 5.

 

At 3:31 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 3:31 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

At 3:32 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 3:41 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite the Chairman of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), Jean-Pierre Blais, for a two-hour public and televised meeting regarding the CRTC’s obligations under the Official Languages Act.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Jason Kenney, for a two-hour public and televised meeting regarding his department’s obligations under the Official Languages Act.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee undertake an informational review on the use and future of using Skype and other teleconference internet networking tools used to promote official language learning and promotion in Canada’s classrooms among students of all ages.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee study the economic benefits of choosing to learn a second official language in communities with substantial minority language populations.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee commence a study and invite artists from the artistic, musical, cultural, and theatrical sectors that produce in both official languages and examine how their talents and skills are used to create opportunities to promote linguistic duality in Canada.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite CBC/Radio-Canada’s President and CEO, Hubert T. Lacroix, for a 2 hour public and televised meeting, considering the importance of CBC/Radio-Canada for the vitality of minority official language communities.

 

At 4:04 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
