The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 3:32 p.m. this day, in Room 228, The Valour Building, the Chair, David Tilson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Jay Aspin, Pierre Dionne Labelle, Chungsen Leung, Hon. John McCallum, Costas Menegakis, Jasbir Sandhu, Devinder Shory, Rathika Sitsabaiesan and David Tilson.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Laurie Hawn for Ted Opitz.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Julie Béchard, Analyst; Sandra Elgersma, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Citizenship and Immigration: Anita Biguzs, Deputy Minister; David Manicom, Acting Associate Assistant Deputy Minister, Strategic and Program Policy; Tony Matson, Assistant Deputy Minister and Chief Financial Officer; Robert Orr, Assistant Deputy Minister, Operations; Wilma Vreeswijk, Associate Deputy Minister.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Pursuant to Standing Order 106(2), the Clerk of the Committee presided over the election of a Vice-Chair.

 

On motion of Costas Menegakis, it was agreed, — That Pierre Dionne Labelle be elected First Vice-Chair of the Committee.

 

The Chair presented the Sixth Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure. The report was concurred in and read as follows:

Your Subcommittee met on Wednesday, November 26, 2014, to consider the business of the Committee and agreed to make the following recommendations:

1. That the Committee conduct a study of the subject-matter of the Supplementary Estimates (B) 2014-2015: Votes 1b and 7b under CITIZENSHIP AND IMMIGRATION, referred to the Committee on Wednesday, November 5, 2014;

2. That the Committee invite officials from the Department of Citizenship and Immigration on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 for one (1) hour in relation to the study of the subject-matter of the Supplementary Estimates (B) 2014-2105: Votes 1b and 7b under CITIZENSHIP AND IMMIGRATION;

3. That a confidential draft report in relation to the study on strengthening the protection of women in our immigration system be distributed to the members of the Committee no later than Thursday, January 15, 2015.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, December 3, 2014, the Committee commenced its study of the subject-matter of the Supplementary Estimates (B) 2014-15: Votes 1b and 7b under CITIZENSHIP AND IMMIGRATION, referred to the Committee on Wednesday, November 5, 2014.
 

Anita Biguzs made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 4:31 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
