The Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics met at 11:00 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Pierre-Luc Dusseault, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Scott Andrews, Charlie Angus, Charmaine Borg, Alexandre Boulerice, Blaine Calkins, Patricia Davidson, Dean Del Mastro, Earl Dreeshen, Pierre-Luc Dusseault and Colin Mayes.

 

Acting Members present: Phil McColeman for John Carmichael and Lawrence Toet for Brad Butt.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Dara Lithwick, Analyst; Maxime-Olivier Thibodeau, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Charmaine Borg moved, — That the Committee study the efforts and the measures taken by Google, Facebook and other social media to protect the personal information of Canadians, and that the Committee report its findings back to the House.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Dean Del Mastro moved, — That the Committee proceed to sit in camera.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 7; NAYS: 4.

 

At 11:04 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:05 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee study the efforts and the measures taken by Google, Facebook and other social media to protect the personal information of Canadians, and that the Committee report its findings back to the House.

 

It was agreed, — That each party send a list of potential witnesses for the study on social media to the Clerk by Friday, May 11, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. and that on Tuesday, May 15, 2012, the Committee proceed to the selection of witnesses for the same study.

 

At 11:37 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
