The Standing Committee on National Defence met at 11:03 a.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Hon. Maxime Bernier, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Claude Bachand, Hon. Maxime Bernier, Ray Boughen, Peter Braid, Hon. Ujjal Dosanjh, Jack Harris, Laurie Hawn, Hon. Keith Martin, Pascal-Pierre Paillé, LaVar Payne and Hon. Bryon Wilfert.

 

Acting Members present: Russ Hiebert for Cheryl Gallant.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Wolfgang Koerner, Analyst; Melissa Radford, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of National Defence: MGen Walter Semianiw, Chief of Military Personnel; Gail Johnson, Director General, Civilian Employment Strategies and Programmes, Assistant Deputy Minister (Human Resources-Civilian); Col Kevin Moher, Director, Land Personnel Management, Army G1, Chief of the Land Staff.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to a briefing on the rehiring of retired soldiers and staff by the Department of National Defence.
 

MGen Walter Semianiw made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 12:32 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:38 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee’s Order of Thursday, April 1, 2010 pertaining to travel be discharged and that the Committee travel to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, and Iqaluit, Nunavut, from June 6 to June 9, 2010 in relation to its study on Arctic sovereignty.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite the following witnesses to appear in relation to its study of the role of Canadian soldiers in international peace operations after 2011:

Dr. Jocelyn Coulon, Director of Réseau francophone de recherche sur les opérations de paix, University of Montréal;

Robert Fowler;

Dr. Jack Granatstein, Senior Research Fellow, Canadian Defence and Foreign Affairs Institute;

MGen (ret’d) Lewis MacKenzie;

Gordon Smith, Director of the Centre for Global Studies, University of Victoria.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee meet on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 in order to consider a draft report in relation to its study on Arctic Sovereignty.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee meet on Thursday, April 22, 2010 in order to hear witnesses in relation to it study of the role of Canadian soldiers in international peace operations after 2011 and discuss committee business.

 

At 1:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
