The Special Committee on the Canadian Mission in Afghanistan met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 228, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Garry Breitkreuz, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Claude Bachand, Garry Breitkreuz, Lois Brown, Bob Dechert, Hon. Stéphane Dion, Jean Dorion, Jack Harris, Hon. Laurie Hawn, Deepak Obhrai and Hon. Bryon Wilfert.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Anita Neville for Hon. Bob Rae and Brian Storseth for Hon. Jim Abbott.

 

Other Members present: Dave MacKenzie.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: James Cox, Analyst; James Lee, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian International Development Agency: Françoise Ducros, Vice-President, Afghanistan-Pakistan Task Force; James Melanson, Director General, Afghanistan-Pakistan Task Force; Melanie Boyd, Director, Planning, Afghanistan-Pakistan Task Force.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, March 3, 2010, the Committee resumed its study on the Canadian mission in Afghanistan.
 

Françoise Ducros made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 5:14 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

 

At 5:17 p.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That, given the unavailability of the Ministers, the Committee hear witnesses from the Department of Natural Resources and the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada on February 15, 2011, concerning the mining industry in Afghanistan, or, failing that, either officials from the Correctional Service of Canada or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

 

At 5:36 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
