FEWO Committee Meeting

The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 11:06 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Vice-Chair, Patricia Davidson, presiding.

Nicole Demers moved, — That the Standing Committee on the Status of Women call upon the government to condemn the excommunication, approved by the Vatican, of the nine-year-old Brazilian girl who had to undergo an abortion after being raped by her stepfather; that the government also condemn the excommunication of the little girl’s mother and of the medical team who carried out the abortion; and that the Committee report this motion to the House.

By unanimous consent, the motion was withdrawn.

Anita Neville moved, — That the Standing Committee on the Status of Women hear from appropriate government officials on what measures and initiatives have been put in place to curtail human trafficking at the 2010 Olympic Games as “to secure those same communities against human trafficking, as a lasting legacy of the 2010 Olympic Games”* and that this matter subsequently be reported to the House of Commons.

*Citizens Summit Declaration.

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

Anita Neville moved, — That the Agency of Status of Women provide the Standing Committee on the Status of Women:

1) With a list of those projects that have been approved since February 2006 to date;

2) With the differing sets of criteria used to evaluate proposals for funding by the Status of Women since February 2006; and

3) And that number of projects rejected for funding since February 2006.

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That consideration of the motion of the Hon. Anita Neville be adjourned until Thursday, April 23, 2009.
