The Standing Committee on Finance met in a televised session at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Rob Merrifield, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Paul Crête, Dean Del Mastro, Rick Dykstra, Jean-Yves Laforest, Hon. John McCallum, Hon. John McKay, Ted Menzies, Rob Merrifield, Thomas J. Mulcair, Massimo Pacetti, Hon. Garth Turner and Mike Wallace.

 

Associate Members present: Martha Hall Findlay.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Thursday, April 10, 2008, the Committee commenced consideration of Bill C-50, An Act to implement certain provisions of the budget tabled in Parliament on February 26, 2008 and to enact provisions to preserve the fiscal plan set out in that budget.
 

The Minister of Finance, the Hon. Jim Flaherty made a statement and, with Jeremy Rudin, Bill James and Chris Forbes, answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Paul Crête moved, — That, as promptly as possible, the Chair of the Standing Committee on Finance write a letter to the Chair of the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration asking the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration to consider Part 6 of Bill C 50, An Act to implement certain provisions of the budget tabled in Parliament on February 26, 2008 and to enact provisions to preserve the fiscal plan set out in that budget, and to convey its recommendations to the Standing Committee on Finance no later than Friday, May 9, 2008.

Debate arose thereon.

 

John McCallum moved, — That the motion be amended by adding after the word “to consider” the following: “the subject matter of”.

The motion, as amended, read as follows:

That, as promptly as possible, the Chair of the Standing Committee on Finance write a letter to the Chair of the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration asking the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration to consider the subject matter of Part 6 of Bill C 50, An Act to implement certain provisions of the budget tabled in Parliament on February 26, 2008 and to enact provisions to preserve the fiscal plan set out in that budget, and to convey its recommendations to the Standing Committee on Finance no later than Friday, May 9, 2008.
