The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 9:03 a.m. this day, in Room 269 West Block, the Chair, Marlene Catterall, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Charlie Angus, Gord Brown, Sarmite Bulte, Marlene Catterall, Maka Kotto, Deepak Obhrai, Bev Oda, Gary Schellenberger, Mario Silva, Scott Simms and David Smith.

 

Acting Members present: France Bonsant for Marc Lemay.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Joseph Jackson, Analyst; Sam Banks, Analyst. As Individual: David Black, Consultant.

 

Witnesses: Canada Council for the Arts: John Hobday, Director; Carol Bream, Acting Director, Arts division; David Poole, Head, Media Arts Section. National Film Board of Canada: Jacques Bensimon, Government Film Commissioner and Chairperson; Laurie Jones, Director General, Communications and Outreach Development.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study of Canadian Feature Film Industry.
 

John Hobday made an opening statement and with the witnesses answered questions.

 

Jacques Bensimon made an opening statement and with Laurie Jones answered questions.

 
 

Bev Oda tabled the following motion — That in light of the changes in the media environment, changes and recent announcements regarding francophone radio and television services, the Minister of Canadian Heritage be called before the Committee within 10 days to address the concerns of the Francophone community in Quebec and outside Quebec. The concerns expressed focus on the level of news and information programming on the private and public radio and television services in addition to the coverage and availability of the Olympic Games of 2010 and 2012 throughout the Francophone communities across Canada.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee waive futher consideration of the nomination Robert Kenneth Armstrong for appointment to the position of Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Canadian Museum of Nature.

 

At 11:10 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
