The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met in a televised session at 3:40 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D Centre Block, the Chair, Paul Steckle, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Gilbert Barrette, Rick Borotsik, Wayne Easter, Mark Eyking, Georges Farrah, Howard Hilstrom, David Kilgour, Larry McCormick, Louis Plamondon, Gerry Ritz and Paul Steckle.

 

Acting Members present: Garry Breitkreuz for Ken Epp, Brenda Chamberlain for John O'Reilly, Dan McTeague for Rose-Marie Ur and Pauline Picard for Marcel Gagnon.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Denis Fréchette, Principal; Dan Shaw, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Better Beef Limited: Bennie Dejonge, President; Lorne Goldstein, Secretary Treasurer. Alliance for Fair Trade in Beef: Wayne Holland, Co-Chair. Canadian Meat Council: Jim Laws, Executive Director. Levinoff Meats Limited: Brian Read, General Manager. Alliance for Fair Trade in Beef: Scott Zies, Co-Chair.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, February 12, 2004, the Committee resumed its study of the pricing of beef at the slaughter, wholesale, and retail levels, in the context of the BSE crisis in Canada.
 

At 4:40 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:45 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

At 3:40 p.m., Scott Zies and Wayne Holland made opening statements and answered questions.

 

Jim Laws made a statement and, with the other witnesses and Scott Zies, answered questions.

 

ORDERED, — That the article from the Montreal Gazette entitled Subway wonders: where's beef? mad-cow restrictions cut sharply into steak supply, presented to the Committee by David Kilgour, M.P. , be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (See Exhibit “AGRI-A“).

 

ORDERED, — That a document indicating boxed beef prices presented to the Committee by David Kilgour, M.P., be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (See Exhibit "AGRI-B").

 

At 6:45 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
