The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 536 Wellington Building, the Chair, Paul Steckle, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Gilbert Barrette, Wayne Easter, David Kilgour, Larry McCormick, Louis Plamondon, Dick Proctor, Gerry Ritz, Paul Steckle and Rose-Marie Ur.

 

Acting Members present: Garry Breitkreuz for Rick Borotsik, Rick Casson for Howard Hilstrom and Deepak Obhrai for Ken Epp.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Denis Fréchette, Principal.

 

Witnesses: Competition Bureau: Sheridan Scott, Canada's Commissioner of Competition; Suzanne Legault, Assistant Deputy Commissioner, Legislative Affairs Division; Richard Taylor, Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Competition, Criminal Matters Branch.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, February 12, 2004, the Committee commenced its study of the pricing of Beef at the Slaughter, Wholesale, and Retail Levels in the context of the BSE crisis in Canada.
 

Sheridan Scott made an opening statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 5:17 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

 

At 5:20 p.m., the Committee resumed sitting in camera to consider its future Business.

 

It was agreed, — That this Committee requests the Minister of Industry to instruct the Competition Bureau to conduct an inquiry under Section 45 of the Competition Act on the pricing of Beef at the Slaughter, Wholesale and Retail Levels, in the context of the BSE crisis in Canada.

 

At 5:32 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
