Meeting No. 22

Wednesday, February 19, 2003

The Standing Committee on Health met at 3:37 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Bonnie Brown, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Carolyn Bennett, Bonnie Brown, Jeannot Castonguay, Brenda Chamberlain, Stan Dromisky, James Lunney, Réal Ménard, Rob Merrifield, Hélène Scherrer and Carol Skelton.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier and Sonya Norris, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Blood Services: Dr. Graham Sher, Chief Executive Officer; Dr. Stephen Vamvakas, Executive Vice-President, Medical, Scientific and Research Affairs. From "Héma Québec": Dr. Francine Décary, Executive Director. From the Department of Health: Julia Hill, Acting Director General, Biologics and Genetic Therapies Directorate, Health Products and Food Branch; Dr. Peter Ganz, Director, Biologics and Radiopharmaceutical Evaluation Centre, Biologics and Genetic Therapies Directorate, Health Products and Food Branch; Dr. Howard Njoo, Director General, Centre for Infectious Disease Prevention and Control, Population and Public Health Branch.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), a session on the safety of the blood supply in Canada as it relates to the West Nile Virus

Graham Sher, Francine Décary and Julia Hill made statements and, with other witnesses, answered questions.

On motion of Brenda Chamberlain, it was agreed, ― That, in relation to its study on health care access and accountability, the proposed operational budget in the amount of $24,000, be adopted.

On motion of Brenda Chamberlain, it was agreed, ― That, in relation to its study of Bill C-260, An Act to amend the Hazardous Products Act (fire-safe cigarettes), the proposed operational budget in the amount of $3,464, be adopted.

On motion of Stan Dromisky, it was agreed, ― That, in relation to its study of HIV/AIDS strategy and funding, the proposed operational budget in the amount of $8,000, be adopted.

At 5:28 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
