Meeting No. 39

Thursday, June 5, 2003

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 9:18 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Bernard Patry, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Stéphane Bergeron, Aileen Carroll, Irwin Cotler, Stockwell Day, Mark Eyking, John Harvard, André Harvey, Francine Lalonde, Keith Martin, Deepak Obhrai, Bernard Patry, Karen Redman.

Acting Member present:  Paul Steckle for The Hon. Art Eggleton, Karen Kraft Sloan for The Hon. Diane Marleau.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: James Lee and Marcus Pistor, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the United Nations Development Programme: Eveline Herfkens, Executive Coordinator, Millennium Campaign.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of the Millenium Development Goals and the role of the United Nations Development Programme (See Minutes of Proceedings of May 27, 2003, Meeting No. 30).

The witness made a statement and answered questions.

At 10:44 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:53 a.m., the sitting resumed “in camera”.

The Committee discussed its future business.

The Committee resumed consideration of relations with Muslim countries (See Minutes of Proceedings of February 6, 2003, Meeting No. 16).

It was agreed, - That in relation to its study on Canada’s relations with Muslim countries, itineraries and a budget for travel by Committee Members in several groups between October 12 and October 25, 2003 in the Middle East and South Asia be adopted and submitted to the Liaison Committee.

At 11:35 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
