Meeting No. 24

Thursday, October 4, 2001

The Standing Committee on Transport and Government Operations met at 10:02 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C Centre Block, the Chair, Ovid Jackson presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Reg Alcock, Gerry Byrne, Bev Desjarlais, André Harvey, Ovid Jackson, Mario Laframboise, Val Meredith, James Moore, Marcel Proulx, Alex Shepherd, Paul Szabo

Acting Member(s) present: Jim Gouk for Peter Goldring, Judy Sgro for John Cannis, Bryon Wilfert for Joe Comuzzi.

 

Other Member present: Stan Keyes

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: John Christopher; June Dewetering, Researchers.

Appearing: From the Department of Transport: The Honourable David Collenette, Minister of Transport

Witnesses: From the Department of Transport: Margaret Bloodworth, Deputy Minister; Louis Ranger, Assistant Deputy Minister, Policy; William J.S. Elliott, Assistant Deputy Minister, Safety and Security Group; Hal Whiteman, Director General, Security and Emergency Preparedness

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 108(2) the Committee began its study of the current state of airline safety and security in Canada.

The Minister of Transport made a presentation and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

The meeting was suspended at 11:48 a.m.

 

The meeting was resumed at 11:52 a.m.

 

The Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

 

It was agreed – That the Committee members travel to Lester B. Pearson International Airport on Thursday October 18, 2001 in accordance with the motion passed in Committee on October 2, 2001

It was agreed – That the Chair, in conjunction with the clerk and researchers, be authorized to prepare a budget for the proposed trip to the Lester B. Pearson International Airport (Toronto) and for a proposed trip to Washington, D.C

At 12:13 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
