Meeting No. 18

Tuesday, March 19, 2002

The Sub-Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities of the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met in a joint session with the Sub-Committee on Children and Youth at Risk of the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Co-Chairs, Carolyn Bennett, and John Godfrey, presiding.

Members of the Sub-Committee present: Carolyn Bennett, Wendy Lill, Larry Spencer, Tony Tirabassi.

Acting Member present: Diane St-Jacques for Anita Neville.

Members of the Sub-Committee on Children and Youth at Risk of the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities present:  John Godfrey, Monique Guay and Alan Tonks.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Julie MacKenzie and Bill Young, Research Officers.

Witnesses: As Individual: Wendall Nicholas. From the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne: Joanne Francis, Client Advocate. From the Katenies Research and Management: Dr. Rose-Alma J. McDonald, Consultant for the Mohawk Council of Katenies, and The Assembly of First Nations. From the University of Victoria: Michael Prince, Lansdowne Professor of Social Policy, Faculty of Human and Social Development.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108 (3)(c) the Sub-Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities of the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities convened a joint meeting with the Sub-Committee on Children and Youth at Risk of the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities to study the status of aboriginal children living on and off reserves and on federal programs available – focus children with disability

It was agreed, – That the Sub-Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities hold a press conference at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 21, 2002 to promote and discuss the tabling of the report Getting it Right for Canadians: The Disability Tax Credit.

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

At 5:26 p.m., the Sub-Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
