Meeting No. 64

Tuesday, July 9, 2002

The Standing Committee on Public Accounts met in camera at 4:02 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, John Williams, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Robert Bertrand, John Bryden, Odina Desrochers, Mac Harb, Pat Martin, Philip Mayfield, Shawn Murphy, Joe Peschisolido, Beth Phinney, Alex Shepherd and John Williams.

Acting Members present: Joe Jordan for John Finlay; Gerry Ritz for Paul Forseth; Marcel Proulx for Sophia Leung; Val Meredith for Rahim Jaffer, Karen Redman for Beth Phinney; Ghislain Lebel for Gilles-A. Perron; Peter MacKay for Greg Thompson.

Associate Members present: Peter MacKay, Val Meredith and Gerry Ritz.

Other Members present: Serge Marcil and Karen Redman.

In attendance: From the House of Commons: Rob Walsh, Law Clerk and Parliamentary Counsel; Greg Tardi, Legislative Counsel. From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Brian O'Neal and Jean Dupuis, Research Officers.

Also in attendance: Michael Edelson, Legal Counsel to Charles Guité.

Witnesses: From the Office of the Auditor General: Sheila Fraser, Auditor General of Canada. As Individual: Charles Guité, Former Executive Director, Communications Coordination Services, Department of Public Works and Government Services.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(e), the Committee resumed consideration of the Report of the Auditor General of Canada dated May 8, 2002 on Groupaction Communications. (See Minutes of Proceedings of Thursday, May 30, 2002, Meeting No. 57; Thursday, June 6, 2002, Meeting No. 59; Thursday, June 13, 2002, Meeting No. 61; Tuesday, July 9, 2002, Meeting No. 63)

Charles Guité made a statement.

The witnesses answered questions.

At 6:03 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 6:12 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of future witnesses.

It was agreed, - That no further witnesses be called until after the Auditor General’s and Royal Canadian Mounted Police investigations have been completed.

At 6:36 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
