Meeting No. 18

Thursday, October 18, 2001

The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 9:10 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Clifford Lincoln, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Jim Abbott, Paul Bonwick, Sarmite Bulte, Rodger Cuzner, Claude Duplain, Christiane Gagnon, Roger Gallaway, John Harvard, Clifford Lincoln, Grant McNally, Dennis Mills, Tony Tirabassi.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament:  Joe Jackson and Terry Thomas, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Senate: The Hon. John Lynch-Staunton. From the House of Commons: John Godfrey, Don Valley West.

The Order of Reference dated Friday, September 28, 2001, being read as follows:

ORDERED, -- That Bill S-14, An Act respecting Sir John A. Macdonald Day and Sir Wilfrid Laurier Day be now read a second time and referred to the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage.

Pursuant to Standing Order 75(1) consideration of the Preamble and Clause 1 was postponed.

The Chair called Clause 2.

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

The Committee proceeded to Clause-by-Clause consideration of the Bill.

Clause 2 carried on division.

Clause 3 carried on division.

Clause 1 carried on division.

The Preamble carried on division.

The Title carried on division.

The Bill carried on division.

ORDERED, -- That the Chair report Bill S-14 without amendment to the House of Commons as the First Report of the Committee.
