Meeting No. 50

Thursday, February 28, 2002

The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 9:10 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Joe Fontana, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Yvon Charbonneau, Madeleine Dalphond-Guiral, Joe Fontana, Paul Forseth, Steve Mahoney, Jerry Pickard, Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Benjamin Dolin; Margaret Young, Reseachers.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) – the Committee resumed its review of Regulations under the new Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

At 9:10 a.m. the Committee began a discussion on guidelines to its draft report.

At 10:07 a.m. the Committee began hearing witnesses on the Regulations.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Labour Congress: David Onyalo, National Director, Anti-Racism & Human Rights Department; Hassan Yussuff, Executive Vice-President. From the Coalition of Concerned Congregations on the Law relating to War Crimes and Crimes against Humanity including those of the Holocaust: Kenneth M. Narvey, Legal Researcher and Chief Operating Officer. From the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages: Dyane Adam, Commissioner of Official Languages; Jack Jedwab, Executive Director, Canadian Studies Association; Gérard Finn, Director General, Policy and Communications Branch.

Hassan Yussuff made an opening statement and with David Onyalo answered questions.

Kenneth M. Narvey made an opening statement.

Dyane Adam made an opening statement and with the witnesses answered questions.

At 12:10 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
