Meeting No. 28

Thursday, November 25, 1999

The Standing Committee on Finance met in a televised session at 9:37 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Maurizio Bevilacqua, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Maurizio Bevilacqua, Scott Brison, Roy Cullen, Nick Discepola, Albina Guarnieri, Richard Marceau, Gary Pillitteri, Karen Redman, Monte Solberg and Paul Szabo.

Acting Members present: Gary Lunn for Richard Harris; Serge Cardin for Yvan Loubier.

Associate Member present: Carolyn Bennett.

Other Member present: Werner Schmidt.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Odette Madore and Jean Soucy, Researchers; Marion Wrobel, Senior Analyst.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Conference of the Arts: Megan Williams, National Director. From the Business Council on National Issues: Thomas d'Aquino, President & Chief Executive; Sam T. Boutziouvis, Vice-President, International Trade and Global Economics. From the Canadian Chamber of Commerce: Nancy Hughes Anthony, President and Chief Executive Officer; Dale Orr, Senior Vice-President, WEFA Group. From the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada: Robert J. Giroux, President and Chief Executive Officer; Robert Best, Director, Government Relations and Public Affairs. From the Canadian Labour Congress: Andrew Jackson, Senior Economist. From the Canadian Council on Social Development: David I. Hay, Vice-President; David Ross, Executive Director; Katherine Scott, Senior Policy Associate.

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 83.1, the Committee resumed its Pre-Budget Consultations. (See Minutes of Proceedings, Tuesday, November 2, 1999, Meeting No. 2).

Megan Williams, Thomas D’Aquino, Nancy Hughes Anthony, Dale Orr, Robert Giroux, Andrew Jackson and David Ross made statements and, with the other participants in the roundtable, answered questions.

At 12:08 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
