Meeting No. 26

Tuesday, February 29, 2000

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 4:42 p.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Colleen Beaumier, Bill Graham, Diane Marleau, Denis Paradis, Bernard Patry, Bob Speller.

Acting Member present: Pauline Picard for Maud Debien.

Other Member present: Irwin Cotler.

From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz and James Lee, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Society of the Red Cross: A. de Mestral, President; Pierre Duplessis, Secretary General and CEO; Paul Wharram, Deputy Secretary General, Governance External Relations.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to meet with the Canadian Society of the Red Cross to discuss the results of the 27th International Conference of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent.

Armand de Mestral, Pierre Duplessis and Paul Wharram made an opening statement and answered questions.

Hon. Diane Marleau gave notice of a motion to urge the Government to consider the advisability of helping the Red Cross to meet its international obligations.

At 4:50 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
