Wednesday, April 5, 2000
The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 3:40 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Joe Fontana, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Leon Benoit, Bernard Bigras, John Bryden, Joe Fontana, Sophia Leung, Rick Limoges, Steve Mahoney, John McKay and Andrew Telegdi.
In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Margaret Young, Research Officer.
Witnesses: From the Canadian Bar Association: Benjamin J. Trister, Treasurer, National Citizenship and Immigration Law Section; Joan Bercovich, Senior Director, Legal and Governmental Affairs; Gabriela Ramo, Member, National Citizenship and Immigration Law Section. From The Greater Quebec Movement : Giuliano D'Andrea, President; Deepak Awasti, Director and Executive Member. From the Canadian Immigration Policy Council: Howard D. Greenberg, Founding Member; Carter C. Hoppe, Founding Member.
Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Thursday, March 23, 2000, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-16, An Act respecting Canadian citizenship (See Minutes of Proceedings, Wednesday, March 29, 2000 , Meeting No. 19).
The Committee resumed consideration of Clause 2.
Benjamin J. Trister and Gabriela Ramo from the Canadian Bar Association made statements and answered questions.
Giuliano D'Andrea from The Greater Quebec Movement made a statement and, with the other witness, answered questions.
Howard D. Greenberg and Carter Hoppe from the Canadian Immigration Policy Council made statements and answered questions.
At 5:07 p.m., the Committee adjourned until Wednesday, April 12, 2000 at 3:30 p.m.
