Meeting No. 72

Thursday, May 13, 1999

The Standing Committee on Natural Resources and Government Operations met at 2:07 p.m. this day, in the Hotel Georgia, Regal Ballroom, Vancouver, British Columbia, the Chair, Brent St. Denis, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Gerry Byrne, David Chatters, John Duncan, Yvon Godin, Carmen Provenzano, Werner Schmidt and Brent St. Denis.

Acting Members present: Joe Comuzzi for Roy Cullen; Alex Shepherd for Marlene Jennings; Monique Guay for Pierre de Savoye; Gerald Keddy for Gilles Bernier.

Other Member present: Philip Mayfield.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jean-Luc Bourdages; Research Officer.

Witnesses: From Greenpeace: Catherine Stewart, Forest Campaigner. From the Sierra Legal Defence Fund: Karen Wristen, Executive Director. From Interfor: Richard Slaco, Chief Forester. From the Western Forest Products Ltd: Bill Dumont, Chief Forester; Sandy Lavigne, Environmental Programs Coordinator. From MacMillan Bloedel: Linda Coady, Vice-President, Environmental Enterprise. From the Western Canada Wilderness Committee: Joe Foy, Campaign Coordinator. From the Truck Loggers Association: Rick Jeffery, Vice-president, Forestry and Government Relations. From the Heiltsuk Nation: Robert Germyn, Band Council Member; Chief Ed Newman.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) the Committee resumed consideration of a study of Canadian Forest Management Practices as an International Trade Issue.

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

At 7:14 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
