(Meeting No. 34)

Tuesday, May 26, 1998

The Standing Committee on Natural Resources and Government Operations met at 3:30 o’clock p.m., this day, in room 308, West Block, the Chair, Brent St. Denis, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Réginald Bélair, Gilles Bernier, Gerry Byrne, David Chatters, Roy Cullen, Jocelyne Girard-Bujold, Jim Gouk, Ovid L. Jackson, Jerry Pickard, Carmen Provenzano and Brent St. Denis.

Substitute Members present: Guy Saint-Julien for Bob Wood, Paul Steckle for Ben Serré, Ken Epp for Darrel Stinson, Bill Gilmour for Darrel Stinson.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament
: Jack Stilborn, Research Officer.

Appearing: The Hon. Alfonso Gagliano, Minister of Public Works and Government Services Canada.

Witnesses: From Public Works and Government Services Canada: Ran Quail, Deputy Minister. From the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation: Marc Rochon, President. From the Canada Post Corporation: Georges Clermont, President and Chief Executive Officer. From the Royal Canadian Mint: Danielle Wetherup, President.

1998-99 Main Estimates: Votes 1, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 under PUBLIC WORKS AND GOVERNMENT SERVICES.

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

At 5:09 o’clock p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:12 o’clock p.m., the sitting resumed, in camera.

The Committee discussed its future business.

It was agreed – That the Standing Committee on Natural Resources and Government Operations invite the President of the Treasury Board, the Hon. Marcel Massé, to appear before the Committee at his earliest opportunity to discuss and answer questions on the 1998-99 Treasury Board Estimates and the operation of the office of the Treasury Board Secretariat.

At 5:38 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
