Thursday, March 19, 1998

The Standing Committee on Natural Resources and Government Operations met at 11:05 o’clock a.m., this day, in room 269, West Block, the Chair, Brent St. Denis, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Réginald Bélair, David Chatters, Roy Cullen, Ovid L. Jackson, Carmen Provenzano and Brent St. Denis.

Substitute Members present: Antoine Dubé for Pierre De Savoye.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament
: Jean-Luc Bourdages, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Mining Association of Canada: Gordon Peeling, President. From the Canadian Association of Mining Equipment & Services for Export (CAMESE): John Baird, Managing Director. From Queen’s University: Dr. L. Daneshmend, Professor, Department of Mining Engineering. From Noranda Inc.: Irwin Itzkovitch, Senior Vice-President, Technology.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), consideration of knowledge and technology based industries in the Natural Resources Sector.

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

At 12:10 o’clock p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:20 o’clock p.m., the sitting resumed.

At 1:15 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
