MINUTES OF PROCEEDING

Tuesday, March 17, 1998
The Standing Committee on Natural Resources and Government Operations met in camera at 11:05 o’clock a.m., this day, in room 269, West Block, the Chair, Brent St. Denis, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Réginald Bélair, Gilles Bernier, Gerry Byrne, Roy Cullen, Jocelyne Girard-Bujold, Jim Gouk, Ovid L. Jackson, Jerry Pickard, Carmen Provenzano and Brent St. Denis.
Substitute Members present: Robert Bertrand for Bob Wood.
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Jean-Luc Bourdages and Jack Stilborn, Research Officers.
It was agreed – That the Committee Chair request a budget of $160,000 from the Sub-Committee on Budget for the purpose of holding public hearings in rural communities on the issue of rural development.
It was agreed – That the Committee authorize, for fiscal year 1997-98 and 1998-99, the Chair, in conjunction with the Clerk, to take the appropriate measures to provide working lunches, from time to time, and that the cost of these lunches be charged to the Committee’s budget.
It was agreed – That the Committee Chair request a budget of $3,500 from the Sub-Committee on Budget in order that the Committee’s Research Officer attend a conference on climate change in Calgary, Alberta, from May 3 to May 6, 1998.
It was agreed – That the Minister of Natural Resources be requested to appear before the Committee at his earliest opportunity but not later than May 14, 1998, to address the main estimates for the fiscal year 1998-99.
At 11:45 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
