MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 32

Tuesday, April 28, 1998

The Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 11:08 o’clock a.m., this day, in room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Reg Alcock, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Reg Alcock, Rob Anders, Caroline Bennett, Claudette Bradshaw, Bonnie Brown, Brenda Chamberlain, Libby Davies, Dale Johnston, Larry McCormick, Robert Nault and Byron Wilfert.

Acting Members present: Jim Gouk for Diane Ablonczy, Yves Rocheleau for Paul Crête.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Bill Young and June Dewetering, Research Officers. From the Committees and Legislative Services: Eric Janse, Committee Clerk; Monique Hamilton and Suzanne Verville, Legislative Clerks.

Witnesses: Human Resources Development Canada: Michael McDermott, Senior Assistant Deputy Minister; Debra Robinson, Project Director, Legislative Review; Yvonne Beaupré, Senior Counsel, Legal Services. Statistics Canada: Krishna Sahay,
Director, Industrial Organisation and Finance.

The Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-19, An Act to amend the Canada Labour Code (Part 1) and the Corporations and Labour Unions Returns Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts. (See Minutes of Proceedings of Tuesday, March 24, 1998, Meeting No. 19).

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of its future business.

Larry McCormick moved, -That if no application are received for the Centennial Flame Award by April 30th the deadline be extended to June 30th, 1998.

After debate, Dale Johnston moved the following amendment:

That the motion be amended by adding after the words June 30th, 1998 the following:

"and that if no applications are received by the deadline of June 30th, the administration be allowed to carry the monies in the following year"

After debate the question being put on the amendment it was adopted.

And the question being put on the motion, as amended, it was adopted.

At 11:21 o’clock a.m., the Committee proceeded to clause-by-clause consideration.

On Clause 8

Debate arose thereon.

Clause 8 carried on division.

On Clause 9.

Debate arose thereon.

Dale Johnston moved, -That the Committee do now adjourn.

And the question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

Accordingly at 12:36 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
