MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 50

Tuesday, November 3, 1998

The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 11:10 o'clock a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Clifford Lincoln, presiding.

Members of the Committee Committee present: Mauril Bélanger, Paul Bonwick, Sarmite Bulte, John Godfrey, Raymond Lavigne, Clifford Lincoln, Inky Mark, Ted McWhinney and Mark Muise.

Acting Member present: Benoît Sauvageau for Suzanne Tremblay.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Gaston Blais and Grant Purves, Researchers.

Witnesses: From the Department of Canadian Heritage: Michael Wernick, Assistant Deputy Minister, Cultural Development; Allan Clarke, Director, Publishing Policy and Programs and Jeff Richstone, Lawyer, Department of Justice.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to consider the subject matter of Bill C-55, Foreign Publishers Advertising Services Act.

Michael Wernick, Allan Clark and Jeff Richstone made opening statements and answered questions.

By unanimous consent, the Committee proceeded to consider its Future Business.

It was agreed,--That the Sub-Committee on the Study of Sport in Canada seek the necessary authority to obtain funding and permission from the House of Commons to hold a televised meeting in Toronto on November 10, 1998 providing that the request does not prejudice the Standing Committee's own request for funds and travel.

It was agreed,--That the Clerk invite witnesses to appear before the Committee on Bill C-55, as determined by the Chair; and

--That Member submit the names of potential witnesses to the Chair.

At 12:13 o'clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
