The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 3:29 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Kevin Sorenson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Jim Abbott, Lois Brown, Johanne Deschamps, Paul Dewar, Peter Goldring, James Lunney, Deepak Obhrai, Bernard Patry, Glen Douglas Pearson, Hon. Bob Rae and Kevin Sorenson.

 

Acting Members present: Jean Dorion for Paul Crête, John Duncan for Hon. Jim Abbott, Hon. Marlene Jennings for Glen Douglas Pearson and Yves Lessard for Johanne Deschamps.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: James Lee, Analyst; Melissa Radford, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Red Cross: Susan Johnson, Director General, International Operations; Faisal Mahboob, Program Manager, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, International Operations. Association of Sri Lankan Graduates of Canada (ASGC): Yoga Arulnamby, President; Raj Thavaratnasingham, Executive Committee Member. Carleton University: Elliot Tepper, Distinguished Senior Fellow and Senior Research Fellow, Norman Paterson School of International Affairs and Centre for Security and Defence Studies. Saint Paul University: Kenneth Bush, Assistant Professor, Conflict Studies Program.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on February 10, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of key elements of Canadian foreign policy.
 

Susan Johnson and Yoga Arulnamby made statements and answered questions.

 

At 4:31 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:32 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Elliot Tepper and Kenneth Bush made statements and answered questions.

 

At 5:07 p.m. Bernard Patry took the Chair.

 

At 5:13 p.m., Kevin Sorenson took the Chair.

 

At 5:28 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:29 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

On motion of Lois Brown, it was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $ 34,550, for the Subcommittee on International Human Rights for their study on Human Rights in Iran be adopted.

 

At 5:29 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
