The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 3:34 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Kevin Sorenson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Jim Abbott, Lois Brown, Paul Crête, Johanne Deschamps, Paul Dewar, Peter Goldring, James Lunney, Deepak Obhrai, Bernard Patry, Glen Douglas Pearson and Kevin Sorenson.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Irwin Cotler for Hon. Bob Rae.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: James Lee, Analyst; Melissa Radford, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian American Business Council: Howard Mains, Member of the Board of Directors. As an individual: Jack Granatstein, Historian and Professor. Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce: Garry Douglas, President and Chief Executive Officer. Norman Paterson School of International Affairs: Colin Robertson, Distinguished Senior Fellow and Director, Canada-U.S. Project, Centre for Trade Policy and Law. Rideau Institute on International Affairs: Steven Staples, Chair. Université du Québec à Montréal: Stéphane Roussel, Professor, Canada Research Chair in Canadian Foreign and Defence Policy, Canada-U.S. Relations in the Arctic.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on February 10, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of key elements of Canadian foreign policy.
 

Howard Mains, Jack Granatstein and Garry Douglas made statements and answered questions.

 

At 4:35 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:37 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Colin Robertson, Steven Staples and Stéphane Roussel made statements and answered questions.

 

At 5:32 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
