The Special Committee on the Canadian Mission in Afghanistan met at 11:03 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Rick Casson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Jim Abbott, Claude Bachand, Rick Casson, Paul Dewar, Laurie Daniel Hawn, Greg Kerr, Dave MacKenzie, Deepak Obhrai and Hon. Bryon Wilfert.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. John McKay for Hon. Bryon Wilfert, Pascal-Pierre Paillé for Paul Crête, Francis Scarpaleggia for Hon. Denis Coderre and Alan Tonks for Hon. Bob Rae.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: James Lee, Analyst; James Cox, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Yves Brodeur, Assistant Deputy Minister, Afghanistan Task Force; Gallit Dobner, Deputy Director, Governance, Rule of Law and Development, Afghanistan Task Force. Royal Canadian Mounted Police: Raf Souccar, Deputy Commissioner, Federal Policing; Paul Young, Superintendent, Program Manager, International Peace Operations Branch (Asia).

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Tuesday, February 10, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of Canada's mission in Afghanistan.
 

Yves Brodeur and Raf Souccar, made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 12:31 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:34 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee transmit to the office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT), the office of the Minister of National Defence and the Canadian Forces and the office of the Minister of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) the brief presented to the Committee on April 2, 2009 by Colonel (retired) Michel W. Drapeau and the brief presented to the Committee on April 2, 2009 by Rob R. Walsh, Law Clerk and Parliamentary Counsel of the House of Commons and that at least one of the respective Ministers be invited to appear before the committee to testify on its acceptability and its feasibility.

 

It was agreed, — That the following people be invited to appear before the Special Committee on the Canadian Mission in Afghanistan: Irshad Manji, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Chris Alexander, Elissa Goldberg, a representative of Rights and Democrary and Soraya Sobhrang.

 

At 12:45 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
