The Special Committee on the Canadian Mission in Afghanistan met in camera at 11:09 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Rick Casson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Jim Abbott, Claude Bachand, Rick Casson, Hon. Denis Coderre, Paul Crête, Paul Dewar, Laurie Hawn, Dave MacKenzie, Deepak Obhrai, Hon. Bob Rae and Hon. Bryon Wilfert.

 

Acting Members present: Jean Dorion for Paul Crête and Rick Dykstra for Greg Kerr.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: James Cox, Analyst; Robert Dufresne, Analyst; James Lee, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: As an individual: Michel W. Drapeau, Colonel (Retired). House of Commons: Rob R. Walsh, Law Clerk and Parliamentary Counsel. University of Ottawa: Wesley K. Wark, Research Professor, Graduate School of Public and International Affairs.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Special Committee on the Canadian Mission in Afghanistan adopt an operational budget of $ 67,200 for the fiscal year 2009-2010.

 

It was agreed, — That the Special Committee on the Canadian Mission in Afghanistan adopt a travel budget of $ 26,939 to travel to Washington D.C. from April 22 to April 23, 2009.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of February 10, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of Canada's mission in Afghanistan.
 

Wesley K. Wark made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 12:07 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:08 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Col. Michel W. Drapeau and Rob R. Walsh made statements and answered questions.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee hear from witnesses on the new law adopted in Afghanistan concerning women's rights, as soon as possible.

 

At 12:59 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
